About Us

Our dream for Sassafras Hill began nearly 15 years ago when we moved from the city to buy a small, old farmhouse on five acres in the Ozarks. With a grove of sassafras trees at the northern corner of the property, we decided to call our homestead Sassafras Hill. Since then we have been growing, crafting and creating a variety of handmade goods. We are delighted to now be able to offer our products to you.

Sassafras Hill is committed to providing homegrown and handcrafted goods that encourage our customers to embrace a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. We are dedicated to curating wholesome ingredients and growing or crafting each product ourselves to deliver exceptional quality items. Our products include handmade bath and beauty products, homegrown culinary spice blends, handcrafted gift and decor items as well as seasonal produce.

Our Processes

What is cold process soap?

All Sassafras Hill soaps are cold process. This is a traditional method of soap-making where oils or fats are mixed with lye to create soap through saponification. This technique preserves the natural glycerin, offering moisturizing properties. With a focus on nourishing oils like coconut, olive, and shea butter, cold process soap provides hydration, vitamins, and antioxidants. Room-temperature creation maintains the integrity of these beneficial ingredients. Free from harsh chemicals, our soap is gentle even on sensitive skin. Botanicals, natural clays and essential oils enrich our soaps, while the curing process results in a mild, long-lasting bar with luxurious lather.

What is superfatting and why is it best for your skin?

At Sassafras Hill we use a soap making process called superfatting. We intentionally leave in a percentage of oils or fats unreacted during the soap-making process. This ensures that there's an excess of these beneficial oils in the final soap product, making it extra moisturizing and gentle on the skin. These unreacted oils, also known as "free oils," remain in the soap and contribute to its hydrating and nourishing qualities.
